The Girls By Emma Cline Book Review

The Girls book Blog Post .jpg

A coming of age story set within the backdrop of the 1960s with a Charles Manson-like cult leader and subsequent murders. That’s how The Girls by Emma Cline was sold, at least to me anyways, and it almost delivered. Almost.

Drawn to the book because I am a big true crime enthusiast and a sucker for a story with a female lead, I thought it would be interested to read the story of a young girl (Evie, aged 14) who, in only a few months, becomes entangled with the charismatic Russell, and obsessed with the wild Suzanne, climaxing to a moment of violence that alters history.

The book, written from the perspective of older Evie, explored her thoughts and feelings from 1969 and her fears of the present. Emma Cline wrote in beautiful prose about being a girl who is on the cusp of womanhood. Evie is lonely and confused, waiting for someone like Suzanne to come into her life and create purpose and excitement. While Evie and Suzanne were decently interesting, some of the other characters fell a little flat. There for the purpose of plot and not really for their own merit. The rest of the time I spent reading I was waiting for the moment to come when the unspeakable violence happens and I would be left with my mouth hanging open….but it never really came.

I don’t want to spoil the story fully, but Evie left me wanting more. More development, more excitement, more of a character that I could appreciate- which I know is very selfish. I believe we were left with something a little more “real” to the situation than what I wanted from the end, but i’m still left a little disappointed.

I was captivated and enthralled, wanting to find out how this girl joins a soon-to-be infamous cult…but left feeling the story and characters could have been more.

All in all, I’d suggest this book for others to read giving it a 3 star rating. If you’ve read this book, I’d be interested to see what you thought about Evie and her time on the ranch.

Shine on.

2016-2017: Everything’s Coming Up Emily

Man…have I neglected this blog way more than I expected, and I apologize. Although I’m pretty certain only a few people ever read this, it did give me satisfaction.

So now, I have decided to pick up the blog again as something to preoccupy my time. The biggest thing that has happened to me since the beginning of 2016 was that I am now engaged to be married! I uprooted my life in New York and moved down to Virginia to be with my fiancé, and now we are living together #adulting hard.

So it is now 361 days until we will become Mr. & Mrs., and I plan to use this blog as a planning tool, offering advice and anecdotes. I also plan to use this to use the blog as a tool to explore the new town I’m in.

That’s all for now. Shine on.

Merry Monday…

Merry Monday

I decided that Monday’s are the worse. Really the hardest days of the week, Monday’s even trump the Friday’s when I’m excited to leave work to visit my boyfriend and the time ticks away slowly. Monday’s are the days when I’m dragging myself out of bed, even though I went to bed around the same time the day before, and I can’t seem to get enough coffee in my system to function properly before 10am.  Because of all this, I decided I’m going to dedicate a post on Monday’s to share something happy or good in the world to make these days a little more bearable.

Today I want to touch upon love and friendship. My Facebook news feed has blown up on the past few weeks of people getting in relationships or getting engaged. I also was able to attend the wedding of a friend two weekends ago. As of right now, I can say love is in the air. In a world where people are worried about divorce or breaking up of a relationship, it’s nice to see that love, new love and mature love, is strong.

However, I want to say that love with your significant other is not the only type of love out there. Yes, I am lucky to be in love, but I receive love from more than just my boyfriend, I receive it from my family and friends. I recently had someone comment on how lucky my high school friends and I are that we’ve remained close since graduation and college. I truly agree. Everyone comes into your life for a reason, and some people stay longer than others. It’s a bond or friendship and love that hold us together.

Love with friends is not better or stronger than love with a significant other, just as love with is significant other is not better or stronger than love with friends, they are just different. One doesn’t equal more self-worth than the other, and that’s something I’ve been able to come to terms with over the years. Love is love. I wouldn’t trade my friends from high school, my friends from college, my boyfriend or my family for anything else in the world.

I’m going to end on a cheesy note, I do believe in soul mates. I, however, don’t believe in just one. I think there are people who come into our lives to mean something, it could be 1 or 15, but they have a purpose. It could be someone who will love you no matter what and have children with you, or maybe a group of friends who love Harry Potter, sushi and froyo just as much as you do, or even a group of friends who share your values, morals and secrets with. Those who leave a mark on us and stand the tests of time are our soul mates.

And that’s my spiel about love and friendship. I hope your Monday was smooth sailing.

Why Lauren Bacall should be the Everygirl Fashion Icon

For anyone who has been living under a rock these past few days, we’ve experienced a loss of some wonderful talented actors. The passing of Lauren Bacall had me thinking about how potentially a few people my age don’t know who this woman is or have had the great joy of watching her movies. I’m a fan of classic films, Audrey Hepburn is one of my favorite actresses and I count Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Arsenic and Old Lace as two of my top favorite movies, so Lauren Bacall was not a stranger to my radar. I won’t pretend I’ve seen all of her movies, I believe only three or four, but in my opinion she is one of the most underrated actresses of her time.

I don’t think she was a good girl as Audrey Hepburn or Debbie Reynolds (or how the studios wanted you to think she was), or as sex goddess as Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, but she had a sex appeal and mystery to her. She was a dark beauty with striking features and a deep slightly raspy voice that had men falling in love. Something that I’ve found amiss with her is that she didn’t stand out as a style icon. Bacall rocked suits and menswear:

She could do it all, not be put in a category, and still go on rocking it like it was her job. I nominate Lauren Bacall to be the every girl style icon. The girl who likes wearing menswear and womenswear style clothing. Who wants to be glamorous and laid-back at the same time.

She was a champ. An underrated style icon and fabulous actress who will be celebrated even in death. I suggest you go and watch The Big Sleep, To Have and To Have Not, and How To Marry a Millionaire, to enjoy yourself some great Bacall.

I’ve been gone…

Hellooooo Interweb!

Sorry for the total and complete lack of posts for…over a month…

Well, you see, I got caught up with Whole30 (I finished it and feel great! It definitely has changed how I look at food, might do another soon) I got caught up in the summer….OH YEAH AND I GOT A JOB. Sorry, I’ve been exited about that. I’m still worried it’s going to be taken away from me…so I’ve been enjoying the feeling while I can. So i can cross that off my 23X23. So now I am back to promise I will have more upkeep of this bad boy, even though I’m sure not many of you out there missed me. This is just an update post, I’ll be back later with more.

oh yeah, and Monday’s still suck.

Summertime Sandals

I took some time today to shop for some new shoes. The shoes to have right now are sandals, and I especially love those sandals with thick heels. I need thick heels though, I tend to walk on my heels and need to extra support, but I also like the way they look.

Sandal heels add a little freshness to an outfit. A little more exciting than a pair of heels, but nothing as outrageous as a set of stripper heels. I haven’t found my pair yet, but once I do you’ll be sure to know!

I looked through more of the internet and I found some of my favorite finds. Enjoy!

Whole30 Day 2

I have lasted two days! Woohoo! To be honest it hasn’t been that bad. I have eggs and veggies or fruits in the morning, chicken and veggies for lunch and then some form of protein and veggies for dinner. I have some nuts for a snack if I get hungry and then fruit for dessert! I’m not hungry as long as I keep making sure I have enough protein, and the only ‘bad foods’ I want is chocolate. My mom thinks that craving will subside…but I don’t think so.

I made some roasted almonds with rosemary, they turned out alright but I’ll have to work on them before I share the recipe.

Hopefully I can figure out some recipes this weekend!
